Rigging and Safety in the jamming sessions

Berlin Aerial Arts festival was founded in 2016 by Berlin Verein VUESCH, a co-operative, not-for-profit group that offers training space for professionals, regular classes and open training.

The 2019 edition of the festival is the third and biggest yet, as we are proud to be awarded the support of the Berlin Senat. We are also proud to announce that the great Arnulf Rating will be our patron this year once again.

By putting on the Berlin Aerial Arts Festival we hope to bring together the best aerial artists, practitioners, teachers and enthusiasts from all over the world, to celebrate and develop our art-form together.

The festival comprises of advanced workshops, masterclasses, jamming sessions, shows, open-stage performance, networking events and much more.

There is also a swimming pool at the venue - To be confirmed later whether we can use it but bring your swimming costume just in case!

If you need to discuss anything, are looking for a place to stay, have questions about workshops e.t.c. – please check out the Facebook Group for festival participants.

We will offer plenty of props to work on. That means there will be silks, hoops, ropes, straps and trapezes.

If you would like to rig something specific that we do not provide (or want to work on your prop to perform in the open stage) please get in touch with us before the festival to talk about rigging.

We do not have many pulley systems, so everything will need to be dead hung from the truss with access via a scaff tower, dependant on rigger available. The height in the jamming area is 9.6M.

Very important - please arrive early for your workshop and do your own warm up. The site is open an hour before classes begin. Teachers will add their own equipment specific warm up, but do not want to spend too much time in the workshop doing this. If you arrive late you cannot join in until you have completed a warm up.

All participants are liable for themselves.

WORKSHOPS

doubles Trapeze

In the duo trapeze workshop we will share our knowledge about how to work with two people on the trapeze.

We will focus on small and big swings, throwing and catching, finding each other and the right tempo between the Base and the Flyer.

We will work on combinations, how to build them, and dynamic elements, but also on how to do them safe, healthy and how to overcome the fear of falling.

We will share our technique with you, but also work with you as a duo to adapt the technique to your personal needs.

Students are expected to have prior knowledge of doubles trapeze and have built up the necessary tolerance to the catchers position. Tuition will be both as a group and as individuals with a lounge system for safety. Participants should come as a duo.

teacher - Liv and Tobi

Liv & Tobi are a Trapeze Duo educated at the Universtiy Codarts Circus Arts. Since the graduation 2014 they are touring all over the world with there Duo Trapeze Act "Acrophobia". A piece that fits into very different circus fields and has allowed Liv & Tobi to gain a wide variety of performance experience. This act has received awards in several Circus Festivals. This year they premiered a French/German circus show called "mostly sweet" where they mixed their duo trapeze technique with other circus disciplines.

When? - Wednesday 14.00 - 18.00 and Thursday 10.00 - 12.15  Cost? -80€ with festival ticket, 180€ without

Silks

The workshops will run in two parts – you can sign up to either or both.

The first workshop is about technique

Starting with warming up on the fabric to active the muscles, and revisit the basic, theory and placement in the air, then to explore sequences and typical Fred's vocabulary and way of moving in the apparatus.

The second workshop is about creativity

Along her career, Fred develop her own way of researching with students, with a lot of exercises with eyes closed, and partnering experiences, Fred try to push each student deeper in his own sensibility, using the quality of each body to extract the essence, the aesthetic and the emotion of each unique person.

teacher - Fred Deb

@_fred.deb_

A graduate of the National Centre of Circus Arts (CNAC) in 1992, Fred Deb is precursory of French contemporary circus in the field of aerial arts.

Since her debut in the French company Jumps Arts, her artistic expression is constantly evolving, reflecting its desire to push the boundaries of a discipline - aerial tissue - of which she is a founder.

Fred Deb and Jacques Bertrand are the founders of the aerial dance Rencontres meetings that take place in July in Pornichet and Saint-Nazaire, the 2 cities are jointly linked to the project. She also runs company Drapés Aeriens.

When? - Thursday 10.00 - 12.00 or 12.15 - 14.15 / Friday 10 - 12.00 or 12.15 - 14.15  Cost? -25€ with festival ticket, 45€ without

Flying Pole

Flying pole is a Chinese pole suspended from a single hanging point, making an aerial equipment. On each day there will be one workshop for aerialists who are not used to pole, and one day for those who are already familiar with pole. You do not have to be a pole expert to come to the pole classes!

The first day workshop will be: Suspended pole

We will learn locks and holds on the suspended pole to then take into vertical rotation. Exploring ascents, descents and flowing through movements. How our connection with the earth can facilitate rotation or swing in the air. How body position, direction and timing can increase or extinguish a spin.

The second day workshop will be: Diagonal rotation

We will explore the movement possibilities offered by the pole with one point fixed to the ground. Rotation on a diagonal axis. A surface to balance on or to hang below. Seamless transitions between floor and pole, giving momentum, dodging, catching, and moving in close proximity to the moving pole.

teacher - Laura Moy

www.lauramoy.co.uk

A dancer and movement artist, Laura has toured internationally in devised contemporary circus works for the past 10 years and is known for her fluid movement quality on pole. She trained in Dance Theatre at Laban before beginning to work with Chinese pole and flying pole and has worked for artists including Firenza Guidi, Mark Storor, Upswing, National Theatre Wales, The Mary Bijou, and Pirates of the Carabina. In 2017 she was supported by Artists International Development Fund to research and develop choreographic work on Chinese pole with Tarn Scully at Circus Oz. She has taught pole for NoFit State Circus and currently teaches students at Circomedia in Bristol.

When? - Thursday 10.00 - 12.00 or 12.15 - 14.15 / Friday 10 - 12.10 or 12.15 - 14.15  Cost? -25€ with festival ticket, 45€ without

straps

This workshop is based on the exploration of movement and the awareness of our body in suspension in one or two arms.
We will liberate ourselves from any tension or habits that are preventing us from finding our natural way of moving on the straps.
These ideas will be applied to some basic principles of aerial work, such as suspension, total elevation, extension, inversion, stretching, and rotation.
We will experiment in various "tempos” and in different directions.
We will take a deep look at the basic positions for work in the straps, arriving at each position in an anatomical and comfortable way for our body.
The aim is to find the most natural way of moving in the air and to inspire aerial artists to integrate this new awareness into their own artistic approach.

Two separate 2-hour workshops.
***SUITABLE FOR ALL AERIALISTS (Silks, Rope, Trapeze...). YOU SHOULD HAVE A STRONG INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED LEVEL IN YOUR DISCIPLINE.***

teacher - Oscar Mauricio

www.oskarmauricio.com

@cia.omkara

Oskar was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1988.

His artistic interest began in 2007, when he was introduced to street art, Contemporary african dance and fire manipulation, and later studied at the National Circus School, Circo Para Todos in Cali Colombia.

Oskar met Soledad Gomez in Argentina, who became his new aerial partner for the Kiebre Duo and the creation of their act SOl_O_S. With this act they won silver at Cirque Du Demain in Paris, and Gold at the Young Stage circus festival in Switzerland.

When? - Friday 10.00 - 12.00 or 12.15 - 14.15  Cost? -25€ with festival ticket, 45€ without

counter-weighting

In this introduction workshop for Aerial Counterweighting we will explore the basic elements of a tacit physical communication between two acrobats lifting each other into the skies.

Trust and awareness for interdependencies are key to this art-form. Experience flights of fancy and raptures of the deep!

Whether both partners are onstage in an obvious duet, or it is rather an aerial solo, with a 'human motor' – we will experiment with different pulley systems to get an overview and feeling for possibilities and (technical) functions, and also discover the potential for artistic expression through Aerial Counterweighting.

This is a 2 days workshop for intermediate and advanced aerial practitioners – you do not need to register with a partner! You are welcome to address special wishes when registering for participation.

E.g. in which system you are interested in, or which aerial apparatus you want to work with in a counterweight system.

teacher - Carmen and Bitschi

www.in-tensegrity.com

@in_tensegrity

Carmen Raffaela Küster & Gernot Bitschi are experienced circus performers specialising in aerial counterweighting. Bitschi is a former gymnast, now professionally working as counterweight and rigger for professional aerialists. Carmen just finished her Masters in Choreography as an Aerialist, after more than 20 years of aerial acrobatic practice.

Carmen and Bitschi founded their own company in_tensegrity with which they created the contemporary aerial piece HochSpannung, premiered 2017 at Winterfest Salzburg. This is one of very few shows explicitly based on aerial counterweighting.

When? - Saturday 10.00 - 14.15 and Sunday 10 - 14.15  Cost? -80€ with festival ticket, 180€ without

Rope

In Group 1 we will examine some of the fundamentals of rope, including ways in and out of root positions, working towards a series of playful sequences, to encourage a widening scope for our own individual aerial vocabularies. We also look at the fundamentals of dynamic and roll-up technique, exploring some common methods for creating links within sequences using these specific forms of movement.

In Group 2 we will take a closer look at dynamic movement, with a view to looking at sequences linking dynamic moves with one another in order to create an flowing quality in the air. Expected moves we will cover in this class includes the fundamentals of beats, scorpion beats, method for beating in and out of s-wrap, beating to handstand/scorpion, and pirouette technique. We will also explore roll-up technique and some varying roll-up methods, including single wrap roll-up, double wrap roll-up, hip lock roll-up and dynamic roll (roll-up technique that uses momentum).

For both groups we will also look at a mixture of climbs, links, and strength-based moves.

teacher - Will Davis

www.will-davis.co.uk

@mrwillaerialist

Will has always been fascinated by the beauty of movement and the thrill of circus and feels that nowhere are these two extremes more sublimely fused than within the aerial arts.

Will has worked with many high profile companies including LinkedIn, Dolce & Gabbana and Virgin Media.

He is the winner of both Circus Maximum in 2014 and UK Aerial Championships 2016.

Will has trained for many years to achieve an exceptionally high level of aerial ability. He has performed and taught aerial all over the UK, Europe and Australia.

Will is based in London and teaches at The National Centre for Circus Arts.

When? - Saturday 10.00 - 12.00 or12.15 - 14.15 / Sunday 10 - 12.10 or 12.15 - 14.15  Cost? -25€ with festival ticket, 45€ without

Suitable for those also interested in static trapeze

With Washington trapeze we will be practicing various headstand and handstand skills on the bar. Washington trapeze is typically much heavier than a normal trapeze bar and has a small (about 4-inch round) headstand platform on it and wire cables rather than ropes. To be able to understand headstand and handstand on the trapeze it is very important to learn the basics on the floor.

In this workshop we focus on finding one's own balance point. We will develop true sense of our core and its location, bringing stability and strength to our arms and hips. You will gain tools, technique, alignment and drills that will lead you to mastery of your own body when doing handstands or headstand. We will work on a wide range of exercises designed to progress flexibility, strength, endurance, alignment and balance both on the floor and on the trapeze.

You will learn to correct yourself and spot others. Together we will learn exercises that unify body create a solid foundation for a lifetime of standing on your hands.

Last but not the least, we will have fun! As the Finnish saying goes: 'Ilon kautta!' (translation: Through joy!')'

teacher - Inka Lilja

www.inkalilja.weebly.com

@incalilja

Inka hails from Finland, and started with the youth circus in 2004. She graduated from Lahti Circus School in 2015, Washington trapeze and handstands as her main disciplines. She is one of the founders of Sisus contemporary circus company. More info www.sisus.net. Sisus has been touring with its first full length show 'Mosh Split' since 2016 all around Europe. Most of her day she spends upside down. Standing on her head or hands, on the floor or on the Washington trapeze or by practicing yoga.

When? - Saturday 10.00 - 12.00 or 12.15 - 14.15  Cost? -25€ with festival ticket, 45€ without

washington trapeze

The workshop focuses on knowing, caring and cleaning the technique used in the execution of the aerial exercises, putting safety in the foreground, thus achieving efficient and organic body movements. Renata aims to guide each student to adapt the tools learned in a personal way, and so fully exploit their own qualities and limitations in balance. She adapts her teaching based on the abilities and interests of the participants, ensuring they not only enhance their technique but also enjoy their time in the workshops and are able to leave with new skills and a sense of accomplishment.

The workshop will cover:

• Ascents and descents of the apparatus that involve greater body awareness, range of strength, mobility and training mainly on shoulders (such as inlocks, dislocks and one-hand suspensions).
• Dynamic exercises based on swing/beats sequences.
• Resistance in apparatus based on static and dynamic sequences that promote personal research and a choreography creation.
• Guided and personal exploration.

teacher - Renata Pinal

@renata.pinal

Renata began her training in 2007 practicing contortion with Alejandro Rodriguez (Mexico, Graduated from Beijing Circus School). In 2009, she discovered aerial dance at HELIOS Aerials and Scenic Arts School (CDMX) where she studied theatrical and physical expression for 4 years. In May 2014, she founded and began directing her own training centre: Circo Zephyr.

Aerial Masterclass

teacher - Lionel Menard

Choreodrama

"What generates movement in a performer, how to guide, nourish and

enhance an artist in the execution of his performance.

How to inhabit one’s body throughout a performance, over and above the technique or instructions of a director.

To continue accepting the invitation to play, to play the game, to play for what’s at stake, to again look, and again find pleasure so rules don’t cause stillbirth.

Making one’s presence felt, over and above the mental preparation that creates mindfulness in all: the performer resembles a top-ranking athlete who goes out onto the track, aware that this is futile but that it is his whole life."

I like to use the term choreodrama for the final destination. Indeed, choreographic dramas are the most appropriate scenic forms for conveying the development of my research.

www.lionelmenard.com

Lionel has worked with Marcel Marceau, Michael Jackson, Philippe Genty, Philippe Glass, Jean Paul Goude and Lea Seydoux.

He says:

My first shows played out in school notebooks and were without words or music. They were just images that were drawn to separate dictation from arithmetic.

This was called doodling in the margins. It was kind of my recreation, my window between the twenty-six-mistakes-dictations and the satisfactory-in red arithmetic.

Forty nine years later, it seem to have become my profession...

Two duets, two fundamentally different pieces!

"hochSpannung"

by in_tensegrity - Carmen Raffaela Küster, Gernot Bitschi, Linda Küster

High tension (Hochspannung) is apparent when the two acrobats catapult each other into the space. The opposing characters provoke each other to face the challenge of being together. They are chasing each other, getting angry and sparking dissension. Connected through a rope and pulley system both are in constant danger of losing the ground beneath their feet.

Play transforms into serious situations: it seems as though they can't be together, but at the same time they cannot be without each other. Despite very tricky situations they still come together again and again in order to achieve more through collaboration than alone. Real risk, deep trust, but also enormous dependence.

Hochspannung by in_tensegrity

An evening full of experiments, from pre-premiere to work-in-progress showings - nothing left out. We are playing and yet critically searching for a current definition of "aerial arts".

Come and see the result of the Master Class with Lionel Menard, the pre-premiere of the LOOOOP Sisters and much more. Applications to the open stage are open from the beginning of August and line-up will be decided by the first of October. Participants must have purchased a festival ticket to apply to perform in the open stage.

"Lignes de soi"

by Fred Deb, with Nina Migeon and Marine Briens

"Lignes de soi" is in line with Fred Deb's work on the symbolism of verticality, the main focus of her research. Verticality as a vector of searching for one's identity.

Verticality that pushes all of us to stand up, balanced between heaven and earth.

Two young female artists, two unique personalities, who do not hesitate to play with the question of gender.
